Chelsea has seen one of the most noticeable transformations in the city in recent times. An old residential area with streets graced with brownstones and townhouses, the neighborhood has sprouted many new restaurants, theaters and boutique stores since the late 1980s.

The West 20s have seen a great revival with numerous galleries relocating there, escaping the increasingly prohibitive rents of SoHo. Also present is the new sports complex Chelsea Piers at the Hudson River, housing a marina, golf driving range, gym, squash, skating and other such activities.
The northern part of Chelsea, the Garment District, is home to bargain shopping and fashion design and production. With many loft buildings now being converted, the area is becoming more residential. West of the Garment District are rows of Walk-ups and Townhouses, which, as Chelsea continues to develop, are being bought and renovated.
